1. Fireworks and Pets Don’t Mix
The loud booms and bright flashes of fireworks can cause intense anxiety in many pets. Dogs and cats have sensitive hearing, and what’s exciting to us may be terrifying to them.
What You Can Do:
- Keep pets indoors during fireworks, preferably in a quiet, secure room away from windows.
- Close windows and curtains to help muffle sounds and block visual flashes.
- Use calming aids such as white noise machines, calming chews, or veterinarian-recommended medications (Call us ahead of time to discuss options!).
2. Watch the Door!
With guests coming and going, it’s easy for pets to slip out unnoticed—especially when they’re frightened.
Safety Tips:
- Make sure your pet’s ID tags and microchip information are current.
- Keep pets in a separate room or crate during parties to prevent accidental escapes.
- Inform guests about your pet’s needs and remind them not to open certain doors.
3. BBQ Hazards
Backyard barbecues can pose several risks. Cooked bones, fatty scraps, alcohol, and certain seasonings can be harmful or toxic to pets.
Avoid These Common Dangers:
- Bones and skewers that can splinter or cause choking.
- Onions, garlic, chocolate, grapes, and alcohol, all of which are toxic to pets.
- Hot grills and open flames—keep curious noses and tails at a safe distance.
4. Heat and Hydration
July heat can be intense. Even short time outside can lead to dehydration or heatstroke.
Keep Your Pet Cool:
- Provide fresh water at all times.
- Limit outdoor time during peak heat hours.
- Never leave pets in a parked car—even with windows cracked, the temperature can rise quickly to dangerous levels.
